March 8th, 2024 marks International Women’s Day (IWD) and is celebrated annually. The day was initiated by  European activists who demanded that women have the right to vote, lead, equal pay and workplace rights. Since its inception till today, over a million people have attended these rallies. In its success, Women’s Day has now become a public holiday in many different countries. In some countries, people take a half day to celebrate this holiday.

International Women’s Day has a different theme annually. This year, the theme is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” which tackles economic disempowerment.

The colours of this year’s International Women’s Day are purple, green and white. The purple signifies justice, dignity and being loyal to the cause. Green means hope, and white represents purity.

Last weekend, many women and others took to the streets of Toronto to celebrate women’s achievements and were demanding equal rights for women worldwide. Canadian women are fortunate to be able to walk the streets like this because some countries women still can’t freely do what they want. Many political leaders were at the march in support of Women’s Day.

There are many ways to celebrate International Women’s Day. You can highlight women in your industry, celebrate women in film, give back to the community, read books by women authors, invite empowering female speakers, host a panel, donate to a charity, wear purple, and learn about impactful women. It does not matter if you are a women or a man, you can always acknowledge and celebrate women. Everyone can play a part in helping form gender equality. There are events, campaign’s, rallies, and many festivals to go and celebrate.
