Summer is finally almost here, and with it comes a season full of exciting adventures! Whatever it is you like to explore, Canada offers something for everyone. Check out these activities we’ve put together in Ottawa and Toronto to make the most of these sunny months.
Top (Free) Activities in Ottawa
Dominion Arboretum
Go through the landscapes of the Dominion Arboretum, which is part of the Central Experimental Farm. With over 1700 species of trees and shrubs, it is the perfect place for a nature walk and some great photography. On the south-east, there is a wide view of the Rideau Canal and Carleton University, a perfect getaway for a picnic.
2. Rideau Canal Locks
Experience the marvel of the UNESCO World Heritage and National Historical Site of the Rideau Canal locks, especially during the summer when the boats pass through. If you’re looking to visit, we recommend grabbing a boat tour giving you the full experience.
3. Free Concerts
Ottawa hosts many different outdoor concerts during the summer. Check listings of the performances in many different parks and public spaces. We recommend you keep your eye out for the Ottawa Bluesfest in July and the Wood Terrace Series. This series is at the National Arts Centre and host outdoor concerns every Tuesday and Wednesday night, just make sure you bring a chair!
4. ByWard Market
ByWard Market is always a classic treat in the summer. You can enjoy street performances, browse local art, local shopping and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. Some upcoming events include: Doors Open Ottawa which has free walking tours from June 7-8 this year and Saravah Brazilian Festival on June 14th.
Top (Free) Activities in Toronto
1. Festivals
Toronto Comic Arts Festival is held on June 7-8 at TMU Athletic Centre. This is a free admission event celebrating comic arts with panels, workshops, and exhibitions. The Luminato Festival is from June 4-22. This is a multi-arts festival that features a free outdoor performance, installations, and cultural events across the city. Pride Toronto is from June 26-29th, which celebrates the diversity and inclusion with free parades, performances, and community events.
2. Outdoor Music and Movies at Harbourfront Centre
Harbourfront Centre hosts free concerts, dance performances, and outdoor movies along the waterfront. Summer Music in the Garden is on from June 21-August 28 usually on at 4 pm and 7 pm. Check out the artists that you might want to attend here. For the screenings, these are freedom every Tuesday by the lake from July 8-August 26th. The dates are coming soon so stay tuned!
3. Farmers Markets
St. Lawrence Market is a vibrant place to explore, with free samples, live music, and community events. This is a great market to discover local goods and foods. On Sundays, you can visit the Green Barn Farmers’ Market to explore locally grown produce, flowers, and artisanal goods, all while enjoying live entertainment and free workshops. If you’re interested in more farmers’ markets, check out the City of Toronto’s website which lists which markets are on which days.
4. Free Movie Nights
Toronto Outdoor Picture Show has outdoor movie screenings at different parks. Pack a blanket, some snacks and enjoy the film under the stars. Check out the local parks as they have free moving nights, that show classic films.
Summer in Canada is all about enjoying the outdoors, spending time with friends and family, and discovering what your city has to offer. Whether you’re walking through Ottawa’s historic streets or relaxing at a park in Toronto, there are plenty of free ways to enjoy the season.
